The Chinese Communist Party’s most senior foreign policy official, Liu Jianchao, is reportedly being detained for questioning by authorities, according to the Wall Street Journal.

The investigation marks the latest turmoil at the highest ranks of the Chinese national security leadership, coming less than two years after the downfall of former Foreign Minister Qin Gangthe sacking of former Defense Ministers Li Shangfu and his predecessor Wei Fenghe, and the investigation of Li’s successor Dong Jun along with the purging of numerous high-level PLA officers as part of a years-long anti-corruption crackdown.
