China is now the largest buyer of Brazil’s soybean crop, as part of a move away from U.S. exports. Chinese buyers have consistently bought large quantities of Brazilian soybeans but are now even putting in orders for delivery in October, traditionally a quiet time in Brazil’s soybean sector but peak time for producers in the U.S.
This partly reflects that a bumper crop in South America is driving down prices. But the recent warming up of Brazil-China relations under the Lula administration and ongoing tensions with Washington mean that China is increasingly leaning into Brazilian sources as a way to kick U.S. farmers out of its supply chains.
