Academics from dozens of top universities around the globe gathered last week in Chiang Mai, Thailand, for the 20th Chinese Internet Research Conference (CIRC). Hailing from Peking University, Nanyang Technological University, Warwick University, and more, the researchers presented their latest research on the Chinese Internet’s flows and impacts in the Global South.
I was lucky to secure a spot at the conference and mingled with experts who have spent years studying how Chinese digital technology links businesses, finance, individuals and government initiatives, and how it engages with developing countries, with a focus on South and Southeast Asia.
