China and Russia led efforts within the United Nations to weaken and defund human rights-related investigations, according to a new report by the NGO International Service for Human Rights. The report said the attempts to use budget cuts to redirect or blunt human rights intelligence happened in closed-door meetings and largely failed. However, it argues that the attempts set a dangerous precedent as the UN faces budget constraints and the United States steps away from its previous engagement with the Office of the High Commissioner of Human Rights. China’s wind power industry plans to double the annual number of new turbines installed over the next five years. The sector, already a world leader, plans to install at least 120 GW of new turbines per year between 2026 and 2030. 1,000 Chinese wind power firms jointly agreed on this declaration. Achieving the goal would double the roughly 60 GW of wind power installed in China between 2020 and 2024. The statement said the target would help “the energy sector take the lead in achieving carbon neutrality”. (SOUTH CHINA MORNING POST)
