Prominent Chinese Scholar Calls for a Blockade of Second Thomas Shoal Unless Philippines Removes Grounded Ship

One of China’s most prominent scholars on South China Sea issues, Wu Shicun, said the crisis with the Philippines over the Second Thomas Shoal is a “bleeding wound” that must be dealt with, or else it risks further escalation.

Wu, who is the founder of the Hainan-based National Institute for South China Sea Studies, laid out a three-point proposal that includes a blockade of the World War II-era Sierra Madre warship that Manila grounded on the shoal to stake its territorial claim.
