Ugandan President Yoweri Museveni issued his first public comments about the media reports that incorrectly alleged the Entebbe International Airport is at risk of being forfeited to China. “I don’t remember mortgaging the airport for anything,” President Museveni told Reuters over the weekend. “There is no problem, they will be paid,” he said refuting a story published in the Daily Monitor newspaper two weeks ago that falsely claimed the airport would be surrendered as part of a debt default. China is moving quickly to promote the adoption of its BeiDou Satellite (BDS) system in the Global South with new agreements this month in both South Africa and the Middle East. On Wednesday, a group of Arab states signed an agreement to implement five BDS pilot projects in 2022 and 2023. This follows a similar arrangement with the South African National Space Agency that was signed earlier this month. BDS is a rival to GPS in the U.S. and the EU’s Galileo system and is a key component of China’s Digital Silk Road initiative. (GLOBAL TIMES)
