Police Use Force to Disburse Anti-Chinese Protests in the Eastern DR Congo

Police fired tear gas on Monday to disperse hundreds of protestors demonstrating against a Chinese-owned gold mine in the small South Kivu town of Kitutu in the far eastern DR Congo province of South Kivu (map). 

The demonstrators are angry that the Chinese company has ignored an order from Governor Théo Ngwabidje on August 20th that the mine immediately cease operations due to serious environmental violations. “The people of Kitutu barricaded the road to demand the Chinese company that continues to exploit minerals stop its activities,” local activist Justin Mubarkikwa told the French news agency AFP.
