The Chinese embassy in Botswana has joined the growing chorus of Chinese diplomatic social media accounts in escalating anti-U.S. rhetoric. In a strongly-worded post published on the embassy’s Facebook page, the mission alleged that none of the funds promised by the United States were ever sent to China.

The tone and directness of the post took some of the page’s followers by surprise: “I’m a bit shocked about the level of professionalism,” commented Brandon Max Tshabatau who works at the Botswana Ministry of the Environment. “Don’t u hv an embassy in America, that should be posting this not China Botswana Ambassador page?” wondered Gaborone high school student Floro R.
