The View From Nairobi: A Chinese Scholar Reflects on the Dramatic Events Unfolding in Guangzhou

As an individual Chinese living in Kenya, here’s my personal take on the complicated and evolving issue of the Kenyans suffering in Guangzhou.

It is unfortunate that there are Africans who are suffering from insecurity in Guangzhou. Many of us are working together trying to help those in need. The incident in Guangzhou reflects the deep fear of the life-threatening pandemic, especially that the rise of imported cases may lead to unfair treatment towards foreigners. It also reflects the sad fact that amid the growing consensus against it, racism still exists in China, even though we are also victims of it. It is a long battle to fight, but we are in this together.
