The bitterly contentious territorial dispute between China and the Philippines in the South China Sea entered a dangerous new phase on Tuesday after a pair of confrontations between maritime forces from both countries led to a minor collision and the injury of four Filipino crewmen.

The first incident occurred when a China Coast Guard (CCG) vessel blocked a Philippine Coast Guard (PCG) ship near the disputed Second Thomas Shoal. Video shows the two ships bumping into one another, causing “superficial structural damage” to the PCG vessel’s hull.
