Zambia’s Lawsuit Against Sino-Metal Sparks Chinese Social Media Storm

International media particularly in the Western countries but also in South Africa and India extensively covered the Sino-Metals Leach tailings disaster that happened back in February, amplifying its impact on lives of Zambian communities and the environment. However, Chinese media maintained a conspicuous silence for months.

That silence has now been broken, not through official channels, but via Chinese social media, where commentary erupted on platforms like WeChat and Weibo following the announcement of multiple lawsuits by affected communities. In one of the suits, affected communities and farmers are demanding $80 billion in compensation from Sino Metals Leach Zambia.
