China To Play Key Role at “Hardest” Climate Meeting

China’s position on the phasing out of fossil fuels remains unclear as the COP28 climate summit nears its end. Wrangles about getting rid of fossil fuels have come to dominate the pivotal gathering in Dubai.

Speaking at a news conference in Dubai during the weekend, China’s chief envoy to COP28, Xie Zhenhua, said the gathering has been the hardest of his career. While he committed China to tripling renewable energy capacity, the position on switching fuels remains ambiguous.
