China Adopts a “Wait and See” Approach to the Political Upheaval in Bangladesh

The Chinese government issued its first comments on the unfolding political crisis in Bangladesh following this week’s overthrow of longtime Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, who fled the country on Monday chased by an angry mob.

Beijing is “closely monitoring the situation,” said the Foreign Ministry in a short statement, adding that it hopes “Bangladesh will restore social stability at an early date.”
