The Chinese government on Tuesday formally named veteran Foreign Ministry official Xu Feihong to become the next ambassador to India, ending a 15-month vacancy that contributed to the deterioration of diplomatic ties between the two Asian giants.

China has been without an envoy in New Delhi since October 2022, the longest period the job’s been empty in nearly half a century.
