A Chinese construction firm is under investigation following the collapse of a 30-floor skyscraper under construction in Bangkok during the 7.7 magnitude earthquake that struck Thailand and Myanmar late last week. The building was the only one to sustain damage among several skyscrapers in the district. The collapse killed at least twelve people, with around 75 believed trapped in the rubble.

The building was a joint project between China Railway Number 10 (Thailand), a subsidiary of a Chinese state-owned corporation, and Italian Thai Development. An anti-corruption watchdog had reportedly raised alarm about irregularities, and an initial investigation revealed sub-standard steel on site. Four Chinese nationals were detained on Saturday under suspicion of entering the disaster site illegally and reportedly trying to remove documents.
