China announced on Wednesday that it would host talks with Iran and Russia on Friday to discuss Iran’s nuclear program as the United States pushes for a new deal with Tehran. China’s Foreign Ministry announced the talks will be chaired by Executive Vice Foreign Minister Ma Zhaoxu and attended by Iranian and Russian deputy foreign ministers.

The meeting will follow a closed-door session of the United Nations Security Council focusing on Iran’s upgrading of its uranium stock close to weapons grade. U.S. President Donald Trump has reportedly sent a letter to Iran’s leadership seeking talks over a possible deal while also publicly floating the idea of military action. Iran’s Ayatollah Ali Khamenei rejected the request. “When we know they won’t honor it, what’s the point of negotiating?” he said. Iran’s rapid enrichment followed Trump’s withdrawal from an earlier deal to limit weapons development in return for sanctions relief.
