Pakistan’s President in Beijing Amid China’s Asian Outreach

Pakistan’s President Asif Ali Zardari arrived in China on Tuesday for a state visit that will include meetings with President Xi Jinping and Premier Li Qiang. The trip is part of a diplomatic blitz between China and Asia, with four leaders visiting Beijing in one week.

While public statements are likely to emphasize their “iron-clad” friendship, private conversations could be tense. The halting of U.S. aid will likely increase Pakistani demand for Chinese funding, even as it also pushes to expand the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC). However, China has been openly frustrated with Pakistan’s failure to contain separatist attacks on Chinese personnel.
