China’s Global Trade Surplus Spikes Amid Boom in Exports

China’s trade surplus with the world last year almost equaled $1 trillion. Trade numbers announced on Monday show that exports rose 10.7%, outpacing predictions. This record high means that Chinese manufacturing is ruling global manufacturing on a scale not seen since the U.S.’ central role at the end of the Second World War.

Trade with Belt and Road countries increased by 6.4%. This caused a landmark shift in global trade, with participating countries making up more than half of China’s total trade for the first time.
