China’s DRC Envoy Seeks to Mend Fences With the Country’s Powerful Mining Company

WEET TRANSLATION: [During my meeting] with Mr. Alphonse Kaputo, CEO of Gécamines, I reiterated China's desire to sustainably support the DRC in the recovery of its mining sector and to [help the country] become an industrial power.

China’s ambassador to the DR Congo, Zhu Jing, paid a visit on Monday to meet Alphonse Kaputo, the powerful chairman of the country’s state-run mining company Gécamines.

The courtesy call was no doubt part of an effort to try and mend ties with the company that’s increasingly at odds with its Chinese joint venture partners that run many of the country’s largest mining operations.
