Nigeria’s decision to ban Twitter last week is just the latest example of how access to social media platforms in Africa is narrowing, according to a new report by the Virtual Private Network company Surf Shark. They report that 30 countries across the continent have either blocked access in the past or currently do so.
Since 2015, the report said, there have been more social media bans imposed in Asian and African countries than anywhere else in the world. In all, 66 out of 180 countries worldwide have blocked or heavily restricted access to social media in the past six years.
