While major newspapers in Africa explore the geopolitical and strategic implications of the recent Russia-Africa summit and other international gatherings among the Japanese, Turks, Indians, and Americans this year, a very different conversation is taking place online.

Voices like those of Ghanaian student leader Israel Venunye are becoming increasingly prominent on social media and online news sites like GhanaWeb. He’s not happy, either with the foreign powers who he describes as pursuing a “neocolonial agenda” for Africa’s resources or African leaders, whose charges are “full of empty rhetoric and sign off their nation’s interests to the detriment of the very people they govern?”
