OVERVIEW:
The China-Global South Project (CGSP) is an independent, non-partisan research and analysis platform dedicated to exploring every facet of China’s engagement in Asia and throughout the Global South. CGSP generates in-depth research, unique data visualizations, and other tools that shed light on the complexities of Chinese global engagement. CGSP’s work is disseminated through multiple channels and inform research, policymaking, and corporate decision-making among a diverse range of stakeholders—including policymakers, diplomats, industry leaders, scholars, and analysts. CGSP currently has staff in East Asia, Southeast Asia, Africa, and South America.
ROLE:
CGSP seeks an established expert to serve as our Non-resident Fellow for Critical Minerals, contributing thought leadership on China’s role in critical minerals supply chains and their implications for the Global South. The Fellow will cover a range of topics, such China’s political, economic, and strategic engagement across the critical minerals ecosystem; upstream extraction, processing and refining dominance; overseas investment; industrial policy; and the geopolitical competition surrounding critical minerals.
This is a part-time position ideal for an experienced scholar, journalist, or policy expert who wants to contribute to CGSP’s mission. The fellow will produce original content for CGSP’s platforms, participate in public and private discussions, and support editorial and research efforts related to the critical minerals.
RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Produce columns, op-eds, and long-form research reports on China’s engagement with critical minerals.
- Contribute to CGSP’s audio and video productions, public events, and private briefings as a subject-matter expert.
- Provide peer review and editorial input on relevant CGSP publications.
- Collaborate on special research projects, including multimedia and data-driven content.
- Engage with stakeholders, media, and policymakers to shape informed discussion on China’s role in the critical minerals supply chain.
- Identify other Global South thought leaders and subject matter experts on China/critical minerals.
SKILLS:
- Deep expertise in critical minerals supply chains and China’s global engagement.
- A strong track record of publications, commentary, or policy engagement on critical minerals and China issues.
- Fluency in English required; proficiency in Mandarin is a plus.
- Ability to work independently in a remote, globally distributed team.
- Prior experience in media engagement (podcasts, interviews, public events) is desirable.
REQUIREMENTS:
- Minimum of eight years of research experience.
- Must have a college degree (all majors welcome, but economics/development/international relations or a related discipline preferred)
- Ability to work independently in a remote setting with colleagues across multiple time zones.
- Preference given to candidates from or based in the Global South.
