OVERVIEW:
The China-Global South Project (CGSP) is an independent, non-partisan research and analysis platform dedicated to exploring every facet of China’s engagement in Asia and throughout the Global South. CGSP generates in-depth research, unique data visualizations, and other tools that shed light on the complexities of Chinese global engagement. CGSP’s work is disseminated through multiple channels and inform research, policymaking, and corporate decision-making among a diverse range of stakeholders—including policymakers, diplomats, industry leaders, scholars, and analysts. CGSP currently has staff in East Asia, Southeast Asia, Africa, and South America.
ROLE:
CGSP seeks an established expert to serve as our Non-Resident Fellow for Climate Change, contributing thought leadership on China’s role in global climate governance and its implications for the Global South. This fellow will analyze China’s domestic climate policies, overseas energy and infrastructure investments, green finance initiatives, and diplomatic engagement in multilateral climate negotiations, with particular attention to how China’s actions shape mitigation, adaptation, and development pathways across Africa, Asia, Latin America, and the Pacific.
This is a part-time position ideal for an experienced scholar, journalist, or policy expert who wants to contribute to CGSP’s mission. The fellow will produce original content for CGSP’s platforms, participate in public and private discussions, and support editorial and research efforts related to climate change.
RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Produce columns, op-eds, and long-form research reports on China’s engagement in climate change, including its domestic climate policy, overseas energy investments, green finance initiatives, and multilateral climate diplomacy.
- Contribute to CGSP’s audio and video productions, public events, and private briefings as a subject-matter expert.
- Provide peer review and editorial input on relevant CGSP publications.
- Collaborate on special research projects, including multimedia and data-driven content.
- Engage with stakeholders, media, and policymakers to shape informed discussion on China’s role in global climate governance and its implications for the Global South.
- Identify other Global South thought leaders and subject matter experts on China/climate change.
SKILLS:
- Deep expertise in climate change and China’s global engagement, including climate governance, energy transition, green finance, or environmental policy.
- A strong track record of publications, commentary, or policy engagement on climate change and China issues.
- Fluency in English required; proficiency in Mandarin is a plus.
- Ability to work independently in a remote, globally distributed team.
- Prior experience in media engagement (podcasts, interviews, public events) is desirable.
REQUIREMENTS:
- Minimum of eight years of research experience.
- Must have a college degree (all majors welcome, but economics/development/international relations or a related discipline preferred)
- Ability to work independently in a remote setting with colleagues across multiple time zones.
- Preference given to candidates from or based in the Global South.
