China’s Foreign Affairs Ministers’ Africa Tour History (1991-2026)

Since 1991, China’s foreign ministers have traditionally begun each year’s diplomatic tour in Africa, visiting a total of 49 African countries to date. In 2026, Wang Yi was scheduled to visit Ethiopia, Somalia, Tanzania, and Lesotho, though the Somalia trip was cancelled at the last minute for security reasons.

A look at the history of Beijing’s Africa tour reveals which countries receive the most attention from China’s foreign ministry. Nigeria and Ethiopia come out on top with seven visits each, with Kenya coming in a close third place with six visits. The annual tour signals China’s commitment to its relationships in the region and continuity in its political outreach in Africa.
