Dr. Rizal Sukma is a Senior Fellow at the Centre for Strategic and International Studies CSIS in Jakarta and currently serves on the Board of Advisers at the International Institute for Democracy and Electoral Assistance, or International IDEA, for the 2024–2027 term. From 2016 to 2020, Dr. Sukma was Indonesia’s Ambassador to the United Kingdom, Ireland, and the International Maritime Organization in London. He’s been with CSIS since 1990, and served as Executive Director from 2009 to 2015. He holds a PhD from the London School of Economics, and his work has shaped thinking on Southeast Asian security, ASEAN, Indonesia’s foreign policy, and more. He was the first Indonesian to receive the prestigious Nakasone Award and was named one of Foreign Policy magazine’s 100 Global Thinkers. He’s also the author of several landmark books on Indonesia’s foreign relations, Islam in politics, and regional security.
