Pauline Kairu is a Kenyan journalist who covers a broad range of issues, around the East African region. She's an independent reporter and has reported with the Nation Media Group (NMG) for close to a decade, having previously, worked in Uganda with NMG’s Daily Monitor and is now based in Nairobi. Kairu is versatile, plying her trade in both hard news reporting and feature-writing. She also had a passion for photography. She has a special interest in environmental & conservation, health, human rights, business, development, and IT reporting.
She holds a Diploma in Mass Communication and is a Bachelor of Arts graduate of the University of Nairobi, with a major in Sociology, and minors in Political Science and Armed Conflict & Peace. Her feature articles have won coveted accolades, both internationally and locally. These include The Cancer World Journalism Award 2016 for her patient-centered investigation into the state of cancer care in Kenya, and two awards in ICT & Telecommunication for the story “Hackers on the loose: Are you safe?”; and in Health “I am waiting for the Lord to take me home” at the 2015 Annual Journalism Excellence Awards (AJEA). The cancer story moved the government to increase investment in medical equipment for the diagnosis of cancer at county level.
