Iran Offers Safe Passage to BRICS Partners as China’s Role Looms Large

Iran offered “safe passage” through the Strait of Hormuz to South Africa and other BRICS countries, underscoring how the ongoing conflict is reshaping shipping access along one of the world’s most critical energy chokepoints.

Tehran signaled that “friendly countries” would be allowed through the strait—even as traffic remains restricted for the U.S. and its allies—highlighting a selective approach that appears to favor major Global South partners, including China and India.
