China Calls for End of U.S. Sanctions Against Venezuela, Cuba

China’s Foreign Ministry on Friday called on the United States to revoke its “Illegal and unilateral” sanctions against Venezuela and Cuba.

The statement came after the announcement that the Trump administration will designate Cartel de los Soles (Cartel of Suns) as a foreign terrorist organization, despite many raising doubts that the organization exists in a functional form at all.

Both China and Venezuela called it a fabricated narrative aimed at sharpening U.S intervention. Mao called on the U.S. “to lift the illicit unilateral sanctions and choose the course of action that is conducive to peace, stability, and development in Latin America and the Caribbean region.”

WHY IS THIS IMPORTANT? While China has long criticized the U.S. blockade of Cuba and the military buildup around Venezuela, trends suggest the opposition won’t move beyond words.
