War of Words Follows Reports of Collision in South China Sea

The Chinese Coast Guard said a Philippine ship deliberately rammed one of its ships during an altercation near the disputed Scarborough Shoal on Tuesday. The Chinese side alleged that more than ten vessels owned by the Philippine government entered the waters around the shoal from different directions and that it used a water cannon to disperse them.

It released a video showing the Philippine ship damaging the deck railing of a Chinese vessel. “The China Coast Guard lawfully implemented control measures against the Philippine ships,” Gan Yu, a Coast Guard spokesperson, said. He said one ship: “disregarded solemn warnings from the Chinese side and deliberately rammed a Chinese coast guard vessel”.
