U.S. President Donald Trump told reporters that the U.S. should have played a more prominent role at China’s military parade to commemorate its victory over Japan in 1945. “I thought it was a beautiful ceremony. I thought it was very, very impressive,” he said. “I watched the speech last night. President Xi is a friend of mine, but I thought that the United States should have been mentioned last night during that speech, because we helped China very, very much.” In his speech, Chinese President Xi Jinping thanked “the foreign governments and international friends who supported and assisted the Chinese people,” but didn’t single out the United States. Cybersecurity agencies from the U.S., UK, Japan, Germany, and other countries released a rare joint statement accusing Chinese state-linked hacking networks of large-scale data theft. The statement [PDF], released last week, accused hackers of targeting telecommunications, government, and military infrastructure networks in several countries. It was reportedly aimed at collectively putting pressure on the Chinese government. While the interlinked hacking attacks, which included headline-grabbing incidents like the Salt Typhoon and Operator Panda hacks, focused on networks, vast amounts of data pertaining to private citizens were gathered in the process.
