China proposed an organization to promote global cooperation on artificial intelligence that would also foreground the Global South. Chinese Premier Li Qiang told attendees at the World Artificial Intelligence Conference in Shanghai that China wants to share its advances in the transformative technology with the world and contribute to global efforts to regulate it.

Li said China believes that all countries and companies should have equal rights to use AI via open-source sharing. He linked this to China’s willingness to share its development experience with the Global South. He warned that AI risked becoming the “exclusive game” of a few companies and countries.
