The Nepalese government announced on Wednesday that it signed a framework agreement with China on the Belt and Road Initiative. Kathmandu signed an initial BRI agreement in 2017, but projects have not progressed so far.

The new agreement paves the way for Nepal to join the BRI fully. The newly-inaugurated Prime Minister K.P. Sharma Oli also drew attention for choosing China as the destination for his first overseas trip, rather than the traditional choice of India.
