China’s ambassador to Vietnam, Xiong Bo, met with Vietnam’s newest president Tô Lâm on Wednesday in Hanoi. Lam was named to the role in May after his predecessor resigned amid a sweeping anti-corruption crackdown.

While Lâm is new to the presidency, he is well-known to Chinese policymakers from his previous role as the country’s Minister of Public Security. Amid the various factions at the highest levels of the Vietnamese government, Lâm is widely considered to favor closer ties with Beijing.
