China lodged a formal diplomatic protest with the Indian government over Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s visit last weekend to a contested border region that China claims as part of “South Tibet” (Zangnan).

“China strongly deplores and firmly opposes the Indian leader’s visit to the East Section of the China-India boundary,” said Foreign Ministry Spokesperson Wang Wenbin at the regular press briefing in Beijing on Monday. “We have made solemn representations to India,” he added.
