The BRI Is Back on in Nepal With Funding for Hydropower Plant

Approval of a loan to support a Chinese hydropower project could signify a breakthrough in the so far stillborn development of the BRI in Nepal.

A provincial Chinese energy SOE, Sichuan Chuantou Energy, secured a $182.50 million loan from the Export-Import Bank of China to support the construction of a plant on the Marshyangdi River in the Himalayas. In June 2021, Nepal licensed the SOE and its joint venture partners to construct three hydropower plants.
