As U.S. donations of COVID-19 vaccines to Africa surge, China’s supply to the continent is slumping. Analysis from the Beijing-based consultancy Bridge shows that over the last three months, China’s global provision of vaccines has been hovering close to zero.
This is despite a pledge that China will provide a billion vaccine doses to Africa, made at the Forum on China-Africa Cooperation (FOCAC) meeting in Senegal late last year. Bridge estimates that in total China has sold and donated 258 million doses to Africa in total, with the bulk of those deliveries made before the FOCAC pledge, and mainly going to a handful of African countries.
