This month, a mere 12 million vaccine doses arrived in Africa, twice as many as the previous month, but still a fraction of what’s required for a continent with a population of more than a billion people, according to new data from the Beijing-based consultancy Development Reimagined.
The continent had been counting on vaccine supplies from the global vaccine alliance known as COVAX with jabs manufactured in India but with New Delhi’s vaccine export moratorium still in place, African recipients are forced to look elsewhere. According to Development Reminaged, China is now the largest provider — even ahead of COVAX.
