The escalating conflict between China and the Philippines over territorial disputes in the South China Sea splashed on the screens of tens of millions of homes across the United States on Sunday when it was the focus of a segment on the popular TV news magazine program 60 Minutes.

Until now, U.S. mainstream media coverage of confrontations between Manila and Beijing has been very limited, even though the United States has a legal obligation to militarily intervene as part of a decades-old Mutual Defense Treaty.
