India and China Move Closer Together Following Wang-Modi Meeting

Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi said his country’s relationship with China is making “steady progress,” following his meeting with Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi on Tuesday. It sets the stage for Modi’s trip to China in October, where he will meet President Xi Jinping.

The meeting follows Wang’s talks with India’s External Affairs Minister Subrahmanyam Jaishankar and national security adviser Ajit Doval earlier this week. It is part of a wider normalization of ties following a meeting between Xi and Modi last year, but gained traction recently due to worsening India-U.S. relations. Washington irked Delhi by imposing tariffs in response to Indian purchases of oil from Russia and by pursuing closer ties with Pakistan.
