Indian Prime Minister to Visit China as Tensions with U.S. Rise

Narendra Modi, the Prime Minister of India, will visit China for the first time in seven years. Modi will travel to Tianjin for the Shanghai Cooperation Organization summit in late August. The announcement further solidifies the diplomatic thaw between the two Asian giants, as India’s relationship with the United States took a nosedive this week.

The Trump administration on Wednesday announced an executive order adding a 25% tariff on Indian exports as a punishment for buying Russian oil. This brings the levies on Indian goods to 50%. In the same week, it was also announced that Field Marshal Asim Munir, the head of the Pakistani army, will visit Washington, DC for the second time in two months. The growing closeness with India’s long-term antagonist will likely further raise tensions.
