Chinese State Media Reacts to Modi’s Maldives Visit

India's Prime Minister Narendra Modi (L) shakes hands with the President of Maldives Mohamed Muizzu during their meeting at the President's Office in Male on July 25, 2025.

Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi announced a $565 million line of credit to the Maldives as part of an official visit this weekend. The visit was interpreted by the Indian press as a reset of the relationship and a regaining of Indian influence in the archipelago country.

Maldivian President Mohamed Muizzu said the visit set “a clear path for the future of Maldives-India relations.” In addition to the credit line, Delhi also reduced payments for an earlier line of credit from $51 million to $29 million per year. The talks also covered a possible free trade agreement.
