China to Feature Prominently in Trump-Marcos Talks

Philippine President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. faces a tough challenge as he meets with his U.S. counterpart, Donald Trump, on Tuesday. He is expected to raise the long U.S.-Philippine defense relationship in the face of ongoing territorial disputes with China in the South China Sea as a rallying point. However, ongoing trade tensions complicate the U.S.-Philippine relationship.

The Trump administration recently announced a 20% tariff on Philippine goods. Manila’s ASEAN compatriots, Vietnam and Indonesia, managed to strike trade deals with Trump, and it remains to be seen whether Marcos can do the same.
