Nearly a dozen officials from the China State Railway Group and China’s Transportation Ministry spent last week in Brasília holding talks about building a massive transcontinental rail line that would link Brazil to the Chinese-operated Chancay megaport in Peru.
The discussions are still at a preliminary stage, but there’s considerable enthusiasm in Brazil over the plan as it would dramatically cut shipping times for Brazilian agriculture and mining products to reach the Chinese market. Conversely, the proposed railway would provide faster access to South America’s Atlantic coast markets, particularly for automakers and electronics products.
