A new report by the sustainable energy research outlet Ember shows that China’s total solar panel exports rose by 10% last year, but that its exports to the Global South lept by 32%, while exports to the Global North fell by 6%. The developing world overtook developed countries for the first time since 2018.

Brazil, Pakistan, and Saudi Arabia were particularly big buyers, while there were also marked upticks in exports to Africa and Latin America. For the second time, Chinese installations of solar arrays exceeded its exports of panels, revealing its growing role as a contractor. Notably, the growth in solar installations around the world surpassed China’s exports, indicating that domestic industries are growing quickly.
