Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi made his first public remarks about the crisis in Syria on Friday, calling for a coordinated response to help civilians who have been displaced following the rebel assault that toppled the longtime dictator earlier this month.

“The international community should … help the region to improve the humanitarian situation and alleviate the suffering of the people of the Middle East, in particular by preventing the resurgence of the refugee crisis in Syria,” Wang told reporters during a press conference in Beijing with his Egyptian counterpart Badr Abdelatty.
