The Indonesian Coast Guard said it “drove out” a Chinese Coast Guard vessel from a contested area of the South China Sea. The Indonesian side was busy with a gas survey conducted by the country’s oil and gas company, PT Pertamina, off the Natuna Islands. In radio communication, the Chinese crew insisted the area falls under Chinese jurisdiction. The Chinese vessel was eventually driven away by the Indonesian navy. (THE MARITIME EXECUTIVE)
China has reportedly installed a new radar system on Triton Island, in the disputed Paracel island group in the South China Sea, which could allow it to surveil a large part of the South China Sea. The system’s reach could include Vietnam’s central coastal region, including several military bases, and could provide Beijing insight into Vietnamese oil and gas activities in disputed waters.
