Leaders from the ten member countries that make up the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) gathered in Laos on Wednesday for an unusually fraught ASEAN summit. Their time in Vientiane is likely to be dominated by twin crises: the civil war in Myanmar and rising tensions in the South China Sea.
They will be joined by dialogue partners, including Australia, India, South Korea, Japan, China, and the United States. U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken will replace President Joe Biden at the summit, while Premier Li Qiang will represent China.
