Rival Palestinian groupings Hamas and Fatah signed an agreement for “national unity” in Beijing. The deal, which includes 12 other Palestinian groups, is aimed at securing Palestinian control over Gaza at the end of the current war with Israel.

The announcement on Tuesday follows three days of talks. The resultant Beijing Declaration includes the formation of an interim government of national unity, the unification of Palestinian leadership under the umbrella of the Palestinian Liberation Organization, elections for a new Palestinian National Council, and the declaration of their intent to form an independent Palestinian state and plan for the reconstruction of Gaza.
