Biden Met With an African Leader Last Week, Didn’t Mention China by Name

U.S. President Joe Biden appears to be taking the advice of advisors and scholars, who’ve told him repeatedly over the past eight months to avoid talking about China when discussing Africa. 

During a brief visit to the White House by Kenyan President Uhuru Kenyatta last Thursday, President Biden avoided any direct references to Chinese loans, the BRI, Huawei, or any of the usual issues that have come up previously in talks between U.S. and Kenyan stakeholders. He also didn’t use any of the coded references to “unsustainable loans” or “imported labor” that frequently come up in interactions between U.S. officials and their African counterparts.
