Namibian Authorities To Demolish a Relatively New Chinese-Built Multi-Purpose Center Due to Poor Construction

Local authorities in the south-central Namibian town of Mariental have decided to demolish a Chinese-built multipurpose youth center rather than spend $54,000 to repair the building, according to a report in today’s Namibian newspaper.

Even though the building is just 11 years old and should be in good condition, municipal officials condemned the facility after dangerous cracks appeared throughout the complex (photo).

Unsurprisingly, the community is very unhappy with the Chinese state-owned construction giant Sinohydro that built the complex and was paid in full for the work (this was not a donated building).

And this is precisely why critics in the U.S., Europe, Japan, and India, not to mention in many African countries, accuse Chinese construction companies of producing shoddy, low-quality infrastructure that deteriorates long before it should.
